Triple world record holder Kipyegon to lead Team Kenya at inaugural World Road Running Champs

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 20 – Triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon will lead a star-studded Kenyan team to the inaugural World Road Running Championships set for Riga, Latvia in October this year.

Kipyegon, the Olympic and world 1500m champion, will be joined in the women’s road mile race by fellow Kenyans, world 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Nelly Chepchirchir.

In the men’s road mile, Kenya will be represented by Olympics 1500m silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot, world indoor 1500m bronze medalist Abel Kipsang and World Under 20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot.

World half marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir will fly the country’s flag in the women’s half marathon where she will be joined by the 2022 World 10,000m bronze medalist Margaret Chelimo, Irene Kamais, Catherine Reline and Janeth Chepngetich.

The Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Simiu will be in the men’s half marathon alongside Berlin Half Marathon champion Sebastian Sawe, Alexander Mutiso, Bernard Kibet and Charles Langat.

Commonwealth Games 5000m champion and World Cross Country champion Beatrice Chebet is the favourite to clinch the women’s 5km race where she will be flying the national flag along with African 5000m champion Caroline Nyaga, and national champion Lilian Kasait.

World 5000m silver medalist Jacob Krop will be in action in the men’s 5km as will be his close friend, Nicholas Kimeli, and Cornelius Kemboi.

The competition will also incorporate the World Half Marathon Championships that were last held in 2020 in Gdynia, Poland.

The course will be a flat, single-lap marathon.
