NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 – The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two police officers in Bungoma following corruption allegations.
In a post shared on its X account, the anti-graft body stated that the two officers were arrested while demanding a Sh4,000 bribe from a boda boda rider in exchange for releasing his motorbike that they had confiscated.
“The suspects, currently held at EACC Bungoma Regional Offices, will spend the night at Bungoma Police Station pending arraignment before the Anti-Corruption Court, tomorrow, Wednesday,” the EACC stated.
The EACC indicated that police corporal Onesmus Kiprop who was also an accomplice to the Bungoma based police officers is being looked for.
“This is part of the mop up exercise by EACC in a bid to root out corrupt elements within the public service.”
The arrests come in the wake of yet another similar exercise conducted by detectives attached to EACC where a police officer Paul Kamau Mbugua was arrested at a joint in Kasarani area for demanding Sh30,000 bribe from a liquor store in Kasarani’s Lumumba-Drive area.
Earlier, EACC had also arrested two Nairobi City country employees Daniel Odidi Ganje and John Gachagua for allegations of diverting county revenue through manipulation of the Nairobi Revenue Services portal.
EACC chairperson David Oginde had in December last year maintained that corruption in the country was a monster that the commission must slay, vowing to go after all corrupt public officials.
“For us Kenya, the fight against corruption is a matter of life and death. I wonder how many of us believe that the fight against corruption is a matter of life and death,” he said while presiding over the International Anti-Corruption Day held on December 9 last year.
