Intoxicated 4-year-old boy in Kisumu rescued from parents who gave him local brew

KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 27 – The department of children in Kisumu have rescued a 4 year old boy from his parents after months of being given local brew.

In an online video that went viral on Sunday, the boy is seen intoxicated, struggling to walk in their Shauri Moyo estate house in the lakeside city.

An activist, Hellen Apiyo says the children department was alerted and rescued the child before the arrest of the mother.

“It is sickening what some parents do to their children,” she said.

Apiyo says neighbours reported that the mother allegedly give her son “changaa” a local brew occassionally.

The arrest of the woman was confirmed by Kisumu county commissioner Josephine Ouko, who promised stiffer action.

“The mother was booked at Kondele police station and is assisting police with investigations,” she confirmed.

Apiyo says the mother will have to be arraigned in court to serve as an example to other parents who neglect and introduce their children to harmful products.

She says the child has been taken to a rescue centre, where he will be monitored before any further action is taken.

“Authorities were by last evening still looking for the father who was not around to help with further investigations,” she said.

She hailed the neighbor who blew up the matter after months of being going unreported to the authorities for action.

“The life of that boy was destined for destruction if no action wouldn’t have been taken. Let’s all be our brothers and sisters keepers,” she said.
