Leopards hunt down Nzoia to climb second

Allan Katerega celebrating the winner for AFC Leopards

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 1 – AFC Leopards came from a goal down to silence Nzoia Sugar 2-1 and move second in the standings in a Kenyan Premier League match played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.

Elvis Rupia sent Nzoia ahead on the 10th minute to see the Bernard Mwalala side lead at the break before Gilbert Fiamenyo levelled the scores two minutes into the second half.

Allan Kateregga gave AFC Leopards the winner in the 70th minute to ensure Ingwe continue their perfect start to the Premier League as they sit second on six points same as their bitter rivals Gor Mahia who travel to Western Stima on Sunday.

In a match described as ‘Ingo derby’, Ghanaian Fiamenyo scored his second goal of the season when he raised high to head home Duncan Otieno’s corner to bring his side back to the game.

Leopards took 37 minutes to find the equalizer after Rupia took advantage of Ingwe’s defensive lapse to open the scores.

Things turned around for Leopards when head coach Stewart Hall introduced Kateregga on the start of the second half withdrawing Joshua Mawira.

Kateregga’s presence saw Leopards step up their game and a minute on the pitch he won a corner that resulted to the equalizer.

Nzoia invaded Leopards goal mouth once again and this time it was Masita Masuta who beat Salim Abdalla and rounded Ian Otieno on AFC Leopards goal but his effort was thwarted after he hit the side post.

Leopards nearly added the second after Sikhai Dennis laid in the ball for Bernard Mangoli but the latter placed the short off target.

However, Ingwe suffered a blow as Kamura Robinson and Fiamenyo picked knocks to be withdrawn for Ramadhan Yakubu and Ingotsi Marcelus respectively.

In other results, Dan Sserunkuma was on target as Bandari thrashed Muhoroni Youth 3-0 to go top of the table on seven points.

In the early kick-off, Ulinzi Stars picked their first win of the season thanks to their 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks with Samuel Onyango netting the all important goal.

Elsewhere, Posta Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by Kakamega Homeboyz.
