Celtic will end Rangers hold on SPL crown- Mugubi

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 8- New Celtic signing Victor Mugubi Wanyama believes the power in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) will shift from champions Rangers to The Hoops this season.

Mugubi, popularly known as Mugabe, joined Celtic from Belgian club Germinal Beershot in a deal estimated to be worth ₤1m (Sh148m) this summer and is committed to helping Neil Lennon’s side overhaul Rangers who have won the SPL for the last three seasons.

“At the moment Celtic are unbeatable. Rangers cannot beat us this year since we have been working hard with our manager Lennon who is the right guy for Celtic and we are going to win many trophies with him this season,” Mugubi emphatically stated on Monday.

The versatile midfielder has also set sights on progressing to the latter stages of the second tier Europa League despite Celtic being handed a potential banana skin in Swiss outfit, FC Sion, in the competitions’ play-off round.

“With the players Celtic have brought and those still in the club, we have more experience and can beat anybody and go far in the Europa League,” he added.

The last time Celtic faced Swiss opposition was in the final qualifying round for the Champions League nine years ago where the Hoops crashed out to FC Basel.

On his initiation to Scottish football, Mugubi stated, “ I have gained more experience since Celtic are a top club and my team mates are experienced international players and it has been good for me.

“In Belgium, football is all about kicking forward and rushing after it and also it’s physical as compared to Scotland since they try to play football, keep the ball and try to score goals.”

He dispelled the notion outside the Old Firm; other outfits in the SPL are weak and cannot offer top competition in a league where the Celtic- Rangers duopoly has dominated the title.

“The team are very strong especially when they are playing Rangers or Celtic and that means we have to train and work hard to remain at the top.”

Mugubi, who arrived for Harambee Stars friendly against Botswana, emphasised the significance of Wednesday friendly to the national team.

“It is important for us to win the game to improve our rankings and give us confidence in our remaining Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.”

Concerning the 2014 World Cup draw where Stars were drawn in a play-off tie with Seychelles for the right to join a pool that has Nigeria, Malawi and the winner between another elimination tie featuring Djibouti and Namibia, Mugubi commented;

“The draw is okay, it’s not easy or hard but for me, I’m fine with it but we need to work hard. Beating Seychelles is very possible.”

And on the increasing number of Kenyan players securing moves abroad in recent times, the younger brother of Inter Milan midfielder, McDonald Mariga offered the national team would be the main beneficiary.

“We have been making a lot of effort and it nice to see Kenyan players doing well in European club. It will be good for the country since in the next two or three years, we will have a strong team.”
