NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 21 — Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has attributed the forceful removal of the Isongo Secondary School Principal in Mumias by parents to incitement from unnamed local politicians.
Barasa blamed “local politicians who have chosen a path of indiscriminate condemnation as opposed to a thoughtful and strategic approach to addressing the matter”, for the incident which he termed shameful.
The Governor said the incident had significantly disrupted learning further warning that it could further plunge the institution into chaos.
Parents in the company of boda boda riders stormed the school on January 15 and ejected the School Principal David Wafula over poor performance by students in the 2023 KCSE exams.
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) responded by withdrawing all teachers from the school.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu condemned the incident cautioning that any such invasion will be treated as a criminal act.
The CS encouraged parents and stakeholders who are aggrieved by poor performance in national examinations to engage relevant authorities.
Machogu noted that learner achievement in national examinations is the reflection of the overall input from all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and candidates themselves.
“In any case, the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission have put in place a robust and elaborate mechanism for evaluating the performance of teachers and field officers which always ensures non-performing staff are dealt with in accordance with existing laws and policies,” he stated.
