NAIROBI, Kenya, February 2, 2026 – Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner has outlined his ambition to play in the English Premier League with his new club, Wrexham AFC.
Vyner has promised to give his all to help his new employers attain promotion to the top flight, in what has been a meteoric rise for the team.
“Another promotion. You know, that’s the goal. My ambition and my drive and my goal is to play in the Premier League. This club is well on the way to do that and hopefully I can help drive into that. I’m sure the supporters will love to hear that,” the 28-year-old said.
Vyner said the Red Dragons fans are in for a treat, saying his decade-long experience in the English Championship will come in handy.
“A lot of hunger, a lot of drive, a dynamic centre-back that can play multiple positions. I like to get my foot on the ball, play, get attacks started. Obviously, in both ends, both boxes, I’ll give everything. Hopefully I can be successful in a Wrexham shirt,” he said.
Vyner signed a three-year deal with Wrexham on the deadline of the January transfer window, ending his 10-year association with Bristol City.
He said the ambitious project at Wrexham was too good for him to resist.
“I think the ambition, the project that’s already well underway, you know, back-to-back to back. It’s something that you can’t help but admire from afar…and now I’m involved, I can’t wait to just help out,” Vyner said.
Wrexham — owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney — have been one of the biggest success stories in English football in recent times.
They rose from the fifth tier of English football to the second ladder between 2023 and 2025, and presently sit sixth in the Championship — a prime position to qualify for next season’s English Premier League.
Vyner says he is looking forward to be part of this fairytale.
“It’s amazing, you know, to be sitting in the play-offs as of obviously today. It’s an amazing story that everyone knows and it’s obviously well documented. You can’t help but think it’s such an amazing story. And I’m buzzing to be a part of it now,” he said.
The centreback — son of a Kenyan mother — will be hoping that a good show with the Red Dragons will attract the eye of Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy.
Vyner’s last match for the team was in an international friendly against Chad in September last year, in the build-up to the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
McCarthy himself has previously spoken of the defender in glowing terms, pinpointing him as one of the cornerstones for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
