NAIROBI, Kenya, March 14 – Young weightlifter Juliana Anyango Ongonga clinched Kenya’s second medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana after finishing third in the women’s 81kg category on Thursday night.
The Kitengela-based athlete accumulated a combined score of 165 points, behind winner Sara Samir Elsayed of Egypt (240 points) and second-placed Jean Gaelle of Cameroon (209 points).
Anyango had returned a score of 73 points in the 81kg snatch and a further 92 in the 81kg clean and jerk.
She follows in the footsteps of fellow countrywoman Esther Kavesa who clinched bronze on Sunday in the women’s 45kg category.
Kavesa finished third with 115 points, behind Egyptian Ramadan Abdelwahab who clinched gold with 127 points as Algerian Nadia Katbi came second with 123.
Another Kenyan weightlifter, Joshua Amunga, finished fifth in the men’s 61kg category with a total of 206 points.
In the men’s 73kg category, Frankline Omondi finished seventh after accumulating a combined score of 231 points.
