Kericho: 50-Year-Old Man Shot Dead With Arrows During Koguta Village Fight

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Koguta Village, about six kilometres east of the police station.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 16 – A 50-year-old man was killed during a violent confrontation between members of two communities in Soin Sub-County, Kericho County, following a dispute over grazing animals.

According to a report recorded at Kipsitet Police Station, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Koguta Village, about six kilometres east of the police station.

Police said the matter was first reported at around 2:40 pm through a telephone call from a member of the public indicating that residents from the Koguta community were engaged in a fight with West Valley security guards.

Officers rushed to the scene and established that a group of individuals from the West Valley community had confronted Koguta residents who were grazing animals in a nearby field. The attackers allegedly drove away an unknown number of animals.

When the Koguta residents pursued the group in an attempt to recover the animals, a violent confrontation erupted. During the clash, bows and arrows as well as other crude weapons were used.

In the course of the fight, Paul Odiwuor, a 50-year-old man, was shot several times in the stomach and also sustained a deep cut on the forehead, dying instantly at the scene.

Two other unidentified Luo men were seriously injured during the altercation after arrows became lodged in their bodies. They were rushed to Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Police later moved the body of the deceased to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Authorities said the situation in the area has since gradually returned to normal, while detectives from the Soin–Sigowet Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office have launched investigations into the incident.

No arrests had been reported by the time of filing this report.
