NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 23 — City Hall has listed designated areas in Nairobi where nightclubs are permitted to operate as part of efforts to weed out illegally operated clubs in residential areas.
The locations include areas within the Central Business District (CBD), Upperhill, Industrial Area, Westlands area, Ngara Shopping Center, shopping malls, Pangani area, Karen Triangle and Major roads.
Nightclub locations in the CBD include Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, Koinange Street, Nairobi River, Haile Selassie, Uhuru Highway, River Road, and Harry Thuku Road.
In Westlands, listed streets include Chiromo Road, Crossway, Muthithi Road, Mpesi Lane, Mogotio Road, Parklands Road, Ring Road and Ojijo Road.
A list shared by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja also included Landhies Road, Factory Street, Workshop Road, Bunyala Road, Uhuru Highway, Commercial Street, Enterprise Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Makadara Railway, Viwandani, Enterprise Road, Aoko Road, Nairobi River, Outering Road, Dandora Industrial Zone, Kariobangi Industrial Zone and Mathare North Industrial Zone.
Parts of Pangani, Thika Road, Muratina Street, Kipande Athumani Street, Mweni Road, Hombe Road and Ring Road Ngara are also cleared for nightclubs.
Along Ngong Road, Karen Road and Langata Road, nightclubs are allowed to operate within shopping centres.
Nightclub operations are also permitted along other major roads including Mombasa Road, Eastern Bypass, Kangundo Road, and Kiambu Road.
City Hall zoning regulations forbid the operation of nightclubs within residential areas but operators have often violated the requirements further infringing noise pollution regulations by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
