Shollei to Azimio: You must respect women leaders

NAIROBI Kenya, Feb 14 – Gladys Boss Shollei, the National Assembly Deputy Speaker, has come to the defense of nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege following remarks made by Azimio leaders during a rally in Machakos on last week.

Shollei said it was “regrettable” that the Azimio team was disrespecting Chege even after supporting the alliance in last year’s election.

“It is unacceptable and appalling what Azimio rallies are degenerating into with our big sister Hon Martha Karua watching and condoning the happenings in this theatre of absurd,” Shollei said in a statement on Tuesday.

The former Murang’a Woman Rep has been under sharp criticism from Azimio leaders for declaring support for President William Ruto.

The attacks stem from Chege’s meeting at State House where she went with 31 other Jubilee Party leaders.

“At the very least, we ask Martha Karua to put her foot down and refuse this wanton attempt to turn Azimio events into the place women leaders are insulted, demeaned and subjected to mean-spirited name-calling and uncalled-for sexual innuendos,” she said.

Shollei also condemned the remarks made by Mumias East MP Peter Salasya directed at Bomet Woman Representative Linet Toto during a rally in Busia on Sunday.

She warned that the country was headed for a dangerous trajectory if no action was taken.

“We have come too far in the question of Gender Equality in this country, nobody should think we will fold our hands and let them reverse the gains we have made as women to be treated equally and with respect by all Kenyans including our esteemed leaders,” she added.

Shollei urged the two leaders to apologize to the two women leaders and that they should refrain from such sentiments again in the future.
