Govt to spend Sh9.6bn on Junior Secondary Schools for 2 terms

NAIROBI KENYA, Jan 21 – The Government will spend Sh9.6 billion on capitation grants for the Junior secondary schools for the first two terms this year.

Speaking on Friday when he released the results of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said that each of the students in the junior secondary school will receive a capitation of sh 15,000 per year.

“The Sh15,000 that will be released for each learner, Sh4,000 will be spent on the development of infrastructure with the greatest priority being on laboratories,” he said.

The CS is expected to make an announcement next week on school development plans after negotiations with World Bank to secure funding to put up roughly 7,000 laboratories across the nation.

Machogu added that in the next financial year, the government will spend Sh18 billion for the junior secondary school capitation grant.

The CS added that a special subcommittee will be formed by the board of management that oversees Junior Secondary Schools to oversee the management of the school’s educational programs and financial resources.

The heads of the Primary Schools where the Junior Secondary Schools are domiciled will serve as secretaries while the chairperson will be a member of the committee.

“A public Junior Secondary School will be headed by the head teachers of the public primary school that domiciles it during the interim period of the transition ending December 30, 2023,” he said.
