CS Murkomen in Rwanda for ministerial bilateral meeting to boost cooperation in transport sector

During his stay in Kigali, the Transport CS is scheduled to engage in discussions with Rwanda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Cooperation, James Kabarebe.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 – Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is currently in Kigali, Rwanda for a ministerial bilateral meeting aimed at bolstering collaboration between Kenya and Rwanda.

Commenting on the visit, Murkomen said that the meeting will centre around enhancing transport and logistics between the two East African countries at the government-to-government (G2G) level.

Murkomen expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the meeting, emphasizing the importance of fostering closer cooperation in the transportation sector.

“Arrived in Kigali, Rwanda for a Ministerial Bilateral meeting to enhance transport and logistics between Kenya and Rwanda at the G2G level,” Murkomen stated on Tuesday.

During his stay in Kigali, the Transport CS is scheduled to engage in discussions with Rwanda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Cooperation, James Kabarebe.

This meeting follows a previous engagement held on February 16, where Murkomen hosted his Rwandan counterpart and accompanying delegates at Transcom House, Nairobi.

The discussions during the February 16 session centered on resolving existing non-tariff barriers, improving cargo transportation along the Northern Corridor, containerization of Inland Container Depots in Naivasha and Malaba, regional integration efforts, and addressing bureaucratic hurdles hindering trade between the two nations.

“I informed the delegation that the Ministry has already implemented President William Ruto’s directive to allow cargo to only be weighed at the port of entry (in Mombasa) and port of exit (Malaba) even as we work with the Ministry of Interior to reduce roadblocks along the Northern Corridor to cut down on the time it takes to transport cargo,” Murkomen said in February 16.

The Transport CS disclosed that the effort will be complemented by ongoing plans to extend SGR from Naivasha to Malaba to allow faster, safer and seamless transportation of cargo from the Port of Mombasa to our sister countries.
