KDF, NYS, Kenya Red Cross airlift medical supplies, relief food to flood-hit regions

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 27 – State House Spokesman Mohamed Hussein says medical supplies, and other relief items have ben airlifted to flood-hit regions through Kenya Defense Forces(KDF).

Speaking Monday during a press conference, Hussein indicated that the National Youth Service (NYS) and the Kenya Red Cross Society was also involved in the process.

President William Ruto directed Treasury to release an additional Sh10 billion to County Governments as part of their shareable revenue to mitigate the effects of El-Nino.

“Cabinet directed the National Treasury to release an additional KSh10 billion to County Governments this week; directed the enhanced deployment of the KDF and all public civilian aircraft to transport medical supplies, food and non-food
items for targeted distribution as recommended,” State House Spokesman Mohamed Hussein indicated.

The sitting further sanctioned a proposal be sent to Parliament for the
replenishment of the Contingencies Fund and the rationalization of
the budget under Supplementary Appropriations II of FY2023/24.

The resolutions by the cabinet to release the funds come hot on the heels of a confrontation between deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and county governors over the El Nino funds.

The county bosses faulted the DP for claiming that the national government had released funds to combat El Nino to the counties.

“We take the position that such utterances are against the spirit of cooperative and collaborative Governments as envisioned under the provisions of Article 6(2) of the Constitution,” said the COG on Gachagua’s statement.
