NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 15 – Detectives have apprehended a Gatundu-based police officer over the allegations of fleecing two foreigners of Sh20,000 USD.
The arrest came after the victims- a Japanese and an American national filed a complaint at the Central Police Station.
Authorities say that the suspect was arrested Monday when he reached out to one of the complainants for the second time with the intent of extorting an additional 10,000 USD.
“Today(Monday) the 14/8/2023 at about 1900hrs at Ambassadors hotel within Central Business District one Police Officer namely No.74536 PC John Nzioka Muoki of DCI Gatundu North was arrested in connection to a report of extortion reported at Central Police station vide OB: 103/9/8/2023 at 1700 hrs,” read a police report seen by Capital FM News.
According to detectives, the officer in question initially detained the two foreigners alongside two unidentified Kenyan male adults within the Nairobi Central Business District.
Subsequently, he proceeded to transport the victims to Ruaka Police Station, where they were allegedly held under unspecified charges before being moved to Gatundu Police Station, where the reported extortion occurred.
Upon his arrest, the suspect was escorted to Central Police Station for questioning.
However, detectives said that no recovery of the money had been made noting that investigations is currently ongoing to arrest his accomplices.
An inquiry file has since opened in respect to criminal offence by police officer.
The matter is currently being investigated by detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
