NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 16 – The Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) vhas begun the process of constituting the Selection Panel that will oversee the recruitment of the Chairperson and five Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
A public notice issued by the PSC Secretary Jeremiah Nyegenye stated that they will be seeking to fill the vacant position for two nominees meant to represent parliamentarians in the process.
Nyengene says interested applicants should hold a degree from a university recognized in Kenya and be Kenyan.
Due to the tight statutory timelines, the Senate Clerk pointed out that the applications should be submitted no later than Monday next week.
This came days after President William Ruto declared six vacancies at the Commission.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and commissioners Boya Molu and Yakub Guliye positions were declared vacant by President Ruto in October 2022 ahead of their exit on January 17, 2023.
Former Vice-chairperson Juliana Cherera and commissioners Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya resigned to avoid a tribunal chaired by Appellate Court Judge Aggrey Muchelule that is investigating their “misconduct” in relation to the 2022 General Election.
The IEBC Act 2022 which has since been assented has changed the composition of the selection panel.
There will be a male and a female nominee from the Parliamentary Service Commission, unlike before when the nominees would be four.
The Public Service Commission, Political Parties Liaison Committee, and Law Society of Kenya will each nominate one person while the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya will nominate two people, a man, and a woman.
