Kabras leave it late to beat Oilers, clinch Driftwood title

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 10 – Jone Kubu scored a sudden death penalty as Kabras Sugar narrowly edged out reigning National Circuit Champions Menengai Oilers 10-7 to clinch the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa on Sunday.

The duel had to go down into sudden death after a 7-7 draw in regular time with Kabras coming from down, Barry Robinson converting Kelvin Wekesa’s try, cancelling out Dennis Abukuse’s opener.

With the win down at the Coast, Kabras have now gone top of the Series standings, edging out erstwhile leaders KCB who were beaten in the semis.

Kabras reached the final of the season opening Dala Sevens in Kisumu, losing to the bankers, but went one better in Mombasa to clinch the Main Cup and assure themselves of the maximum 22 points from the Coastal tour.

Meanwhile, KCB finished in third place after edging out Strathmore Leos 29-12.

In the semis, Oilers, the defending Circuit champions, had edged out the bankers 17-12 while Kabras had beaten Strathmore 12-7.

After picking 19 and 22 points respectively in the first two tournaments, Kabras are top of the pile with 41 points, two ahead of second placed KCB. Strathmore are third with 32 while holders Oilers are fourth with 31.

The Series will head down to Nakuru next weekend, for the Prinsloo Sevens.
