Amonde and Co. ready to roar in Mombasa after conquering Dala Sevens

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 6 – Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) rugby 7s team coach Andrew Amonde says the team is ready to take on whatever challenge presented to them by their opponents at this weekend’s Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.

The bankers won last weekend’s Dala Sevens – the first leg of the National Sevens Circuit – and the former national sevens team skipper believes KCB will be the team to beat at the coast.

“I know teams will be eager to play KCB following our excellent display in Kisumu. All I can say is that the team is ready to take on anyone this weekend. Our confidence level is through the roof and the boys are raring to stamp their authority once again as the undisputed number one rugby side in the sevens circuit,” Amonde said.

He added: “We will blend the young players together with the experienced ones in this leg, we know for sure that this is a marathon and not 100 meters race.”

Amonde is still unsure of the team he will put out on the pitch at the Mombasa Sports Club come Sunday, noting that all the players are in contention for a starting berth by virtue of their hard work in training.

“We may make two changes in the traveling squad depending on how today’s training session goes and availability of the players. Overall, everyone has been working so hard to be part of the Driftwood team, but we will see what happens before the end of day,” he said.

The bankers have been pooled in a competitive group that comprises Nondescripts, the 2015 NSC champions Nakuru RFC and Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.

KCB will be hoping for a great outing in Mombasa, which will allow them extend their lead at the top of the National Sevens Circuit beyond the current 22 points.

Losing finalists in Kisumu, and the bankers’ bitter rivals, Kabras Sugar, lie second on the log with 19 points as third-place finishers at Dala Sevens, Strathmore Leos, are placed third with 17 points.
