LONDON, July 15- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that Alexis Sanchez is set to miss the opening fixture of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

After helping lead Chile to Copa America title glory this month, the 26-year-old has been given time off until August 3, a week before the start of the season.

He had been expected to miss a handful of games while he built up his fitness, but Wenger expects him to return much quicker.

“Usually it takes three weeks to be competitive. With Alexis it could be a bit less. He will miss certainly the first game,” Wenger said.

“He is an important player for us and he showed he has the winning mentality when he took on the responsibility to take the last penalty in the Copa America final against Argentina.”

As such, the earliest possible return for Sanchez would be for Arsenal’s visit to Crystal Palace on August 16.
