MAKUENI, Kenya, Mar 31 – The government has announced plans to release capitation funds to schools before the start of the second term, in a move aimed at ensuring smooth learning operations across the country.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the funds will be disbursed before April 27, allowing schools to adequately prepare for reopening.
“The release of capitation before April 27 will enable schools to operate smoothly, while the distribution of Grade 10 textbooks guarantees that learners have the resources they need to succeed,” he said.
The Ministry of Education will prioritise the distribution of textbooks, particularly for Grade 10 learners, as part of efforts to support the rollout of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) pathways.
Bitok added that funds will also be allocated for the development and printing of textbooks for technical and applied subjects to strengthen practical learning.
The PS revealed that consultations are ongoing between the Ministry, the National Treasury, and the Teachers Service Commission regarding the future of Junior School (JS) teachers.
This follows concerns raised by leaders after the Environment and Labour Relations Court ruled against the current terms of engagement for the teachers.
Bitok also disclosed that the government is engaging stakeholders and private sector players to streamline public and privately funded scholarships.
The aim is to improve efficiency, increase the number of beneficiaries, and ensure fairness in allocation.
During his visit to Makueni County, Bitok inspected ongoing projects, including the construction of Sh40 million classrooms at Kyambai Comprehensive School.
He later toured Kaumoni HGM Comprehensive School, accompanied by fellow Principal Secretaries, as part of efforts to monitor education infrastructure development.
The government says the timely release of capitation funds, coupled with improved resource allocation, will play a key role in stabilising school operations and supporting learners under the new education system.
