NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 30 – Chaos erupted outside the PCEA Church in Kariobangi on Sunday as rival factions clashed while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua attended morning service.
According to witnesses, the scuffle quickly escalated, prompting police officers to fire in the air and lob tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The disturbance drew the attention of local residents, many of whom were forced to seek cover as the tense standoff unfolded.
No immediate injuries were reported, but authorities confirmed that the situation was contained shortly after police intervention.
The incident highlights rising tensions among political supporters in Nairobi neighborhoods, particularly during high-profile visits by senior politicians.
Police urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“We acted swiftly to prevent escalation. Members of the public are reminded to respect the law and maintain peace,” said a Nairobi County police spokesperson.
The situation at Kariobangi comes amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, where rival factions have occasionally clashed over party loyalties and local influence.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and those identified as instigators of the violence could face legal action.
