Nairobi police officer who demanded a bribe to release detained car arrested

Dobin Peter Naibei was arrested on Thursday, December 14.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 17 — Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a Traffic Police Officer based at Shauri Moyo Police Traffic Base in Nairobi for demanding bribe to release a detained vehicle.

Dobin Peter Naibei was arrested on Thursday, December 14.

However, the complainant refused to give the bribe and reported the matter to EACC resulting to the arrest.

“The Commission is pursuing prosecution under section 6(1) (a) as read with Section 18 of the Bribery Act of 2016. Meanwhile, the Commission urges all motorists and road users to embrace the culture of compliance with traffic laws and regulations,” read the statement.

The Commission noted that traffic management corruption can have disastrous results, such as the death of drivers or the permanent disabling of passengers in accidents caused by operating cars that are not fit for use on the road, carrying an excessive number of passengers, and other infractions.

EACC urged caution during the holiday season when many Kenyans are traveling to different destinations calling on the public to report any cases of corruption.

“Notably, non-compliance with traffic laws is part of the factors encouraging corruption on Kenyan roads where motorists seek to bribe their way out of law enforcement actions. Shunning traffic corruption, therefore, is key in the pursuit of road safety,” the Commission stated.

EACC urge the public to report any suspected corruption case through Toll-Free line: 1551.
