NYERI, Kenya, Sep 11 — At least 600,000 Kenyans who have attained the age of 70 have been enlisted for monthly stipends under the country’s social protection program.
The figure includes disabled persons.
Speaking at Bargurret, Kieni constituency, Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore said so far, they had enumerated 600,000 out of the targeted 700,000.
Those listed will join another 1.2 million that is already under the Inua Jamii Program.
“As ministry we are happy with this exercise so far. We are doing well despite challenges of slow registration. We’re confident of hitting our target,” said Bore.
The CS admitted that the exercise is slow due to shortage of staff but added that they are working with National Government Administration Officers with a view to bringing all on board.
“We are working closely with Ngao offices they will employ the same formula that ensured all farmers are registered for fertilizer to bring on board everyone,” said Bore.
She assured the elderly that their stipends will not delayed saying that they will receive their dues by the 28th of every month .
“We are working closely with banks to ensure their stipend of Sh2,000 is paid to them on time. In fact, we will be using agents to ensure their money is closer to them .”
Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina said that he will mobilize resources to ensure that all eligible elderly are registered.
