NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 15 – Nairobi has kicked off a public participation drive to validate a proposed 8-zone cluster for bars and night clubs in a bid to tame the proliferation of niteries in residential areas.
The plan drafted by the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board considers areas within the city zoned as Commercial areas under the Physical and Land Use Planning Act of 2019.
Speaking during a forum in Westlands on Wednesday, Vena Nyanchoka, a city environmental officer, said City Hall will revise the clusters if the public puts forward a compelling case.
“If you feel that these areas that have been proposed by the government are not okay, kindly let us know to make changes,” Nyanchoka stated.
The proposed areas include Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Venue, University Way, Koinange Street, Nairobi River, Haile Selassie, Uhuru Highway, River Road and Harry Thuku Road in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
In Industrial Area, the board listed Landhies Road, Factory Street, Workshop Road, Bunyala Road, Uhuru Highway, Commercial Street and Enterprise Road.
Others are Lungalunga Road, Makadara Railway, Viwandani, Enterprise Road, Aoko Road Nairobi River, Outering Road, Dandora Industrial Zone, Kariobangi Industrial Zone and Mathare North Industrial Zone.
NEMA certification
The regulator will also clear shopping malls with soundproofing and required National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) certification.
In Westlands, designated spots include Chiromo Road, Crossway, Muthithi Road, Mpesi Lane, Mogotio Road, Parklands Road, Ring Roa and Ojijo Road.
In Ngara, bars and night clubs can set up at Shopping Centre Muranga Road, Ring Road, Nairobi River and Limuru Road.
Upperhill Link Road, Hospital Road, Elgon Road, Matumbato Road, Kiambere Road and Railway Line constitute proposed locations in Upperhill.
In Pangani, bars will operate along Thika Road, Muratina Street, Kipande Athumani Street, Mweni Road, Hombe Road and Ring Road Ngara.
The board zoned Ngong Road, Karen Road and Langata Road as proposed areas designated in the Karen Triangle.
