EU Ambassador praises Kenyans for their outstanding conduct during the 2022 general election

NAIROBI KENYA, Jan 16 – The European Union has lauded Kenyans for their conduct during the 2022 general election with an impressive score of 10/10 saying that is the way to go for any democratic nation.

Speaking during the launch of the 2022 Post-Election Evaluation Report in Nairobi, EU Ambassador to Kenya Henreitte Geiger said the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which has a 65 percent rating, has performed better than the judiciary, which has a 64 percent rating, in terms of carrying out its official tasks.

She praised Kenyans for their resolve to maintain calm throughout the just ended general election in 2022, saying it is the only option for any democratic nation.

“In the last elections, Kenyan citizens deserved 10 out of 10 for their outstanding performance, very safe the elections,” she said.

“I would like to applaud all Kenyans for their firmed commitment to peace and this is the only way forward in any democracy.”

Geiger continued by saying that Kenyans stood out for being so committed to democracy and the rule of law.

She continued by saying that the nation’s elections were conducted with the utmost professionalism and integrity.

The ambassador challenges the new commission to uphold the legacy that the outgoing panel has created and to never compromise the commission in any way, be it political or otherwise.

“We should not let down, we have to build on the moment on what we have achieved now and build towards even better elections in 2027,” she added.

Geiger commended the commissioners and IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati for their excellent efforts.

She stated that new benchmarks for African democracy have been established.

“You did a great service to Kenya, your integrity in doing your job and giving hope to millions of Kenyans is outstanding and you have set standards for any democratic country in Africa,” she added.

“You are writing history today for you are the first one to complete the full constitutional term of six years, congratulations and all the best.”
