Nairobi United thrashed by Wydad Casablanca in Confederations Cup opener

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 24, 2025 – Nairobi United began their Confederations Cup group stage campaign on a negative note with a 3-0 drubbing by Wydad Casablanca at the Stade V Mohammed Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday night.

Ayoub Bouchta put the three-time CAF Champions League champions in the lead after only three minutes, firing a low shot from the left flank, which slithered past the arms of Kevin Oduor in goal.

The FKF Cup champions then put up a resolute defensive performance, Oduor making up for his earlier mistake with a number of acrobatic saves to deny the African giants a second.

Their resistance finally broke at the stroke of halftime as Mohammed Bouchoura added a second with a fierce strike from the edge of the box.

The goal came a few minutes after Shami Kibwana had a chance to test Wydad keeper El Mehdi Benabid but instead misfired his shot after latching onto a through ball.

The second half took on more or less the same script with the Moroccans dominating possession as the visitors sought to stymie their attacks.

On few occasions, the Kenyans launched incursions into their opponents’ territory but these were easily snuffed by the Wydad defence.

Brian Mzee Omondi thought he had pulled one back when he exploited a spilled ball by the keeper to slot into an empty net.

However, the linesman’s flag was already raised for an infringement albeit replays showed that the goal should have stood.

Mohammed Rahyi then drove the final nail in the coffin in the 86th minute with a lobbed shot at close range, after being put through by Guilherme Ferreira.

Things went from bad to worse for Nicholas Muyoti’s charges following Omondi’s dismissal in added time for a second bookable offence.

The midfielder, who was already on a yellow card, was given his marching orders for simulation in the penalty box.

Naibois will regroup for their next match in Group B against Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) AS Maniema who beat Tanzania’s Azam FC 2-0 in an earlier match on Sunday.
