Yego eager to start season positively in Doha

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 16 – With his eyes trained on a World Championship podium finish later on in the year on Japan, former champion Julius Yego is looking towards a positive start to his 2025 season as he lines up for his first competition of the campaign at the Doha Diamond League.

Yego has been training at his base n Eldoret, readying for a better campaign that he hopes will end up in World Championship qualification.

Yego, who won the world title in 2015 in Beijing and then went on to win silver at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, believes he has done pretty well to prepare for the season.

Speaking to Telecomasia.net, the 36-year-old is optimistic of better tidings this season.

“I have prepared well in terms of training because I have been working since the turn of the new year. Of course the target in the first competition of the season is to start well and give a good throw. It will be a very competitive field in Doha and I believe that challenge will make me better. The target as I start the season is definitely to hit the World Championship qualification mark. This is something I believe I am very much capable of achieving,” Yego told Telecomasia.

The javelin entry standard for the 2025 World Championships is 85.5m and this is the magic number that Yego will be eying all season long, leading to the global showpiece in Tokyo.

After Doha, his next target will be the Police Championships as well as the Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Gold Tour meet that will be staged in Kenya.
