NAIROBI, June 18- Limuru’s John Karichu and Kericho’s William Odera will vie for the Kenya Amateur Match Play Championships title on Saturday after breezing through their semis at Vet Lab Sports Club on Friday.
Karichu beat Paul Muchangi 6/5 in a commanding performance in an all Limuru Golf Club semifinal with Odera punching his ticket for the decider by edging out Alfred Nadwa of Njoro 2/1 in a tightly contest affair.
In the quarters Karichu ran all over Royal’s Kenneth Bollo beating him with an impressive score of 7/6 as Muchangi’s notched a notable 6/5 victory over Railway’s Stephen Njoroge.
Nandwa ended home golfer David Ongeri’s run with a 2/1 victory to book his place in the semis while Odera topped Muthaiga’s Bhavnish Chandaria by a similar margin in another close encounter.
This year’s tournament included amateurs who have a handicap of 9 and lower which encourages more players to play unlike the previous year’s where players had to have a handicap of 8 and under.
Over the years we have seen champions of the amateur tournament go on and turn professional and perform brilliant within the big guns of golf in the country.
