NAIROBI, Kenya, May 17 – The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has announced a countrywide crackdown targeting quacks masquerading as lawyers.
LSK President Eric Theuri said the professional body which accredits lawyers in Kenya will work with the police and the public prosecutor’s office in the campaign.
The campaign, he said, was in response to multiple complaints by members of the public duped by individuals promising to offer legal services.
“We’re working very closely with the National Police Service and the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure appropriate charges are laid against those arrested,” Theuri said.
He said LSK’s eight regional offices will lead the efforts within their respective jurisdictions.
Theuri said LSK had documented four cases in Nairobi reported at Kilimani and Central police stations.
“We have taken the opportunity to raid down a few offices [with respect to] which we had received complaints from the members of the public,” he said.
Theuri warned unscrupulous individuals preying on unsuspecting members of the public that LSK will spare no efforts to exposing them.
Linda Kiome, convener of the LSK’s Practice, Ethics and Standards Committee warned that lawyers will not sit and watch quacks flood courtrooms.
“Let this be a warning to anyone who does not have a practicing certificate, that members have complained and we are not ready to share our bread and butter,” she said.
