Nairobi MCAs term threats to impeach Sakaja as premature, unjustified

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 4 – Nairobi Members of the County Assembly have termed threats by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatanga on impeaching Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja as premature and unjustified.

The Nyeri Senator on Monday this week threatened that the ruling party may resolve to impeach him if he continues to disrespect Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

His sentiments haven’t been supported by ward representatives of the Nairobi County Assembly from both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions.

The Assembly’s Minority Whip Mark Mugambi said it is too early to start thinking along those lines, as the Governor hasn’t done anything to warrant that.

Kenya Kwanza MCAs who are the minority at the Assembly last month accused Governor Sakaja who was elected on a UDA ticket of sidelining them and instead favoring the Azimio side, after he appointed persons allied to the rival Azimio Alliance to key county portfolios.

The Umoja One MCA however said the Governor still has time to fix his relationship with the MCAs and the party.

“We haven’t reached that stage yet. What I will advise the Governor is to mend his relationship with his party hierarchy since it’s the same party that sponsored his candidature,” he added.

On his part Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai of Azimio dismissed the impeachment talks, and told the Nyeri Senator that ‘you can’t lead the capital city with the mindset of a villager’.

The vocal Azimio MCA said that Nairobi is a cosmopolitan county and ethnic politics can’t see the light of the day.

“Nairobi City County is really progressing and we haven’t seen much wrong with Sakaja. Unless something drastic changes , as Azimio we haven’t found a reason to dream of removing Governor Sakaja. He is doing fine,” Alai added.
