Kisii man who murdered 2 daughters fit to stand trial: psychiatrist

Nelson Ontita was arrested after he allegedly killed his two children aged 10 months and two years in cold blood when he was left with them at home in Kiobegi village in Nyamache subcounty.

KISII, Kenya, Jan 12 — A man who killed his two children last week at in Kisii is mentally fit to face trial, a psychiatrist submitted in court on Thursday concluded.

Nelson Ontita was arrested after he allegedly killed his two children aged 10 months and two years in cold blood when he was left with them at home in Kiobegi village in Nyamache subcounty.

Their bodies were found in a maize plantation by their mother.

The officer said the psychiatrist’s report indicates Ontita is fit to stand trial after the suspect underwent a mental assessment tests on Wednesday.

Ontita was arrested and taken to Ogembo Law Courts under a miscellaneous application.

Prosecution council Ian Mukusi, in an application, prayed with the court to give the investigation 14 days to hold Ontita in police custody pending investigations.

“We are seeking for 14 days to hold the suspect in police custody as the police finalize investigations,” said Mukusi.

So far the investigation officers have recorded statements from the witnesses who are also family members including Ontita’s parents.

The officer said exhibits had been sent to the government chemist in Kisumu for analysis. They included a panga, a trouser and a pair of sandals which had blood stains.

Investigation officers also extracted nails from the deceased persons in a bid to match their DNA with that of the suspect.

“We are also conducting autopsy either today or tomorrow, said the investigation officer.

He said the investigating team will close the miscellaneous file upon the Approval from the Office Director of Public Prosecution and charge Ontinta with murder.

“Within the 14 days we are writing a letter to the DPP to allow us close the miscellaneous file and open another file to charge the suspect with Murder,” the IO said.

The case will be heard on January 23.
