NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 4 — The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has secured a conviction against a Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company employee for using a forged academic certificate to secure employment.
According to the Commission, Joseph Kihara Kaburugu presented a fake Diploma in Sports Science Management purportedly issued by the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
“Upon conclusion of investigations, the file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who approved charges of forgery and uttering a false document,” EACC said in a statement on Friday.
Kaburugu was first arraigned before Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on January 21, 2025, where he denied the charges.
After a full trial, the court on September 30, found him guilty of uttering a false document, contrary to Section 353 of the Penal Code, but acquitted him of the forgery charge under Section 215 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
On October 2, Kaburugu was sentenced to pay a fine of Sh100,000 or serve one year in prison in default.
EACC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding integrity in public service and warned that anyone attempting to obtain employment or benefits through fraudulent means would face legal consequences.
