NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27 — Traffic leading to the city was Saturday disrupted for hours as traffic marshals cleared sections of Uhuru Highway and Mombasa road impeding inbound traffic.
Motorists who opted to use the expressway were stuck at major toll gates with the spillover from Mombasa Road clogging exits at the Eastern Bypass and Southern Bypass.
The gridlock which started building up shortly before 10am was expected to clear later in the afternoon, organizers of the annual St John Ambulance Save a Life Walkathon indicated.
In a statement, the organizers said areas around Nyayo Stadium, Bellevue, General Motors and Sameer Business Park would be inaccessible.
“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid any inconveniences,” read part of the statement.
The walkathon kicked off at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Participants started at KICC, headed to Nyayo Stadium Roundabout before returning to the KICC. A 10-kilometre race was routed to Bellevue in South C, and back to KICC.
The 21-kilometre race started at KICC to Mombasa Road Sameer/General Motors u-turn.
