Students in Nandi school protest death of colleague after beating by teachers

NANDI, Kenya, Mar 6 – Police in Tinderet, Nandi County are investigating the death of a form one student who died after corporal punishment by teachers.

Two teachers are under probe following the incident that happened over claims of cheating in exams.

Kelvin Kiptanui, a form One student at Chemase secondary died at Nandi-Hills level 4 hospital hours after he was admitted in critical conditions after the corporal punishment at school.

The deceased, who was hardly two weeks old at the institution, is reported to have been assaulted by his teachers for making references in a Physics textbook during an afternoon Friday March 3 quiz.

Tinderet sub-county police commander Ali Jire said the matter was reported on Sunday by the mother of the deceased and had handed over the case to DCI.

Monica Cherobon, the mother of the deceased said her son was well when he left home for school on Friday morning and was only summoned by the school administration in the evening at Chepsese dispensary.

The deceased had been rushed to the facility after collapsing at the staff room during the beating by two male teachers.

She said, her firstborn child was vomiting blood and complained of internal stomach injuries following the punishment that included 16 strokes of the cane, kicks and being roughed up by 2 teachers.

The deceased reported to Chemase secondary two weeks ago due to lack of fees.

The teachers had treated with contempt his use of textbook to answer Physics quiz and was whisked out his class to the staff room where he was assaulted.

The body is in Nandi-Hills hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination to establish how he died.

The colleagues of the student staged a protest on Sunday night demanding action from police.

Police said they will take action after an autopsy report is out.
