NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 21 – Police have seized what they suspect is fake gold that was discovered in a safe box at Barclays Bank, in the ongoing investigation that started when large sums of fake currency were found on Tuesday.
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti stated that the gold was found in a small box late Wednesday, in what he has linked to the fake gold racket by criminals.
Kinoti said that the fake gold weighing 60 kilograms will be subjected to further tests on Thursday.
He was at the bank’s Queensway branch on Wednesday as part of the investigations on the procedure followed when allocating customers safe boxes.
The Bank stated that it is actively assisting the DCI “following the arrest of a customer in relation to the possession of counterfeit foreign currency banknotes yesterday.”
“Following an internal review of our records concluded late Tuesday night, we identified another safe deposit box registered in the name of the same customer. We immediately reported it and subsequently handed over the box to the DCI. This is in keeping with our zero-tolerance approach to all forms of criminal activity and our commitment to assist with the investigation,” it said through a statement.
The statement further pointed out that the Bank is committed to the highest standards of governance and compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
“In recent years, the sophistication of criminal activities including money laundering, corruption, bribery and fraud has increased globally. Yesterday’s incident has reinforced the urgency of action to recognise and respond to these risks, whilst upholding our obligations to honour client confidentiality.”
The incident came after investigators found Sh34 billion in fake currency in a Ruiru house three weeks ago.
