NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 14 – The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) on Thursday ventured into voter rich Mt Kenya Region to drum up support for the coalition ahead of the March 4 general election.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka led the CORD campaign team in a series of rallies in various parts of Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties in mid Eastern Region.

Odinga held a rally at Tunyai while Musyoka was in Chuka town before converging at Mikinduri market in Meru County for a joint rally. Later, the Prime Minister headed for another rally in Lare in Meru.

Odinga who is the coalition’s flag bearer said that the county was endowed with vast resources and promised that his government had elaborate plans to heavily invest in the area to boost living standards of residents.

He pledged that his government will construct a steel manufacturing plant in the county to utilise rich deposits of iron ore in the area and coal from the neighbouring Mwingi District.

“We have finalised plans for the construction of a steel manufacturing plant in this county if elected,” said the PM.

Addressing a public rally at Tunyai Centre, Odinga explained that steel production will be key to industrial take-off in the country.

”This is the plan we have as CORD and we look forward to implementing it this year when we take power,” he said.

He noted that production of quality steel locally will make it possible for the government to speed up implementation of mega ventures like the LAPPSET project.

The PM added that the undertaking will create employment opportunities and enable saving of the much needed foreign currency.

Vice President Musyoka who was in Chuka urged all the registered voters in the region to turn up in large numbers during polling day and cast their votes in support of the coalition.

“Vote for CORD to ensure it secures a first round victory at the poll,” said the VP.

Musyoka who was accompanied by former nominated MP Mohammed Affey, and several aspirants from the area said that a CORD government will deliver to Kenyans what they have been yearning for through commitment for change and reforms.

The vice president also spoke against tribalism saying it had continued to divide the country and deny it the status of a united nation.

“We are a country but we have not yet attained a nation status because of entrenched tribalism that has continued to divide our country.

He urged wananchi in Tharaka Nithi County to keenly study the various policies and political agendas fronted by those seeking leadership positions to enable them vote wisely on an informed basis.

The Vice President reiterated that Cord stood for a peaceful and united country where all people including the minority groups will be proud of and enjoy their rights as provided for by the new Constitution.
