NEW YORK, USA Dec 23- Judge Lee Muthoga was successfully elected to the Residual Mechanism of the International Criminal Tribunals at elections concluded on Tuesday this week at the United Nations in New York.

Competing with 28 other candidates for the 25 available positions, Judge Muthoga came in an impressive fifth.

“He enjoyed overwhelming support from other Member States of the UN garnering a total of 162 votes, which was almost double the number of votes required to achieve absolute majority,” a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry read.

Since October 2003, Judge Lee Muthoga has served as ad litem Judge in Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, having been elected to the position in June 2003.

“He will now be entered in the Roster of Judges who will be called upon to serve in the Residual Mechanism,” the statement further said.

His election comes barely a month after the successful election of immediate former Attorney General Amos Wako to the International Law Commission.

In 2010, the UN Security Council established the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, through resolution 1966 (2010) to finish the remaining tasks of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and for the former Yugoslavia.

The Residual Mechanism will commence its operations on July 1 2012 for the Rwanda Tribunal and on July 1 2013 for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.
