, NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7 – A police officer in a jealous rage shot dead 10 people in a rampage through two bars in Siakago early on Sunday before giving himself up for arrest.

The officer shot and killed two of his police colleagues in a bar, before running amok in another bar nearby, killing eight civilians, Mbeere North District Commissioner John Chelimo said.

He said the man was on guard duty outside the local District Commisioners residence around 1am when he erupted into a jealous rage after being told his girlfriend was drinking with his colleagues in a nearby bar.

"That is when he excused himself and lied to his colleagues that he was going for a short call, only to go to the bar where he had been told his girlfriend was," Mr Chelimo said.

The man shot two colleagues inside the bar.

"He then proceeded to a neighbouring bar and shot indiscriminately at people who had rushed out to see what was happening," Mr Chelimo added.

"He was just shooting at anybody on sight, in total 10 people died," he said.

The police chief did not say if others had been wounded during the incident. He said the man had turned himself in at the police station following the shootings.

"He is now in custody and several people who witnessed the incident and those who were lucky to have survived have recorded statements," Mr Chelimo said.

Cases of police officers running berserk and opening fire at people are common in Kenya.

In July, an Administration Police officer went berserk and killed two people before he shot himself dead in Kericho.
