NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 — Two individuals from Samburu voluntarily surrendered an AK47 rifle, along with two rounds of ammunition, to local authorities on Tuesday.
Police said the firearm is linked to an individual associated with a livestock theft syndicate.
The residents turned over the weapon to law enforcement officials in what authorities have termed as an act of civic responsibility.
The Sere Olipi Police Station took custody of the rifle as evidence.
Authorities encouraged other members of the public who may possess illegal firearms to follow suit and surrender them to the authorities, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
Incidents of livestock theft and banditry, largely attributed to the proliferation of illegal weapons, have been rampant in Baringo County, situated in the North Rift region.
In 2023, the government’s concerted efforts led to the recovery of over 140 firearms within the operational zones across six North Rift counties.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has on various occasions reiterated the government’s commitment to disarming individuals in possession of illegal firearms, urging voluntary surrender.
A police-led operation supported by the military has targeted Samburu, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, Baringo, and Laikipia counties in a disarmament campaign.
The Interior Ministry is banking on collective efforts to combat crime and uphold peace and security in the region.
