SGR Charges To Increase By Between Sh500 And Sh1,500 From Jan 1

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 1 – From January 1, 2023, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) user will pay an additional Sh500 to Sh1,500 to travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Kenya Railways (KR) has announced that a one-way trip from the capital city of Kenya to the coastal town on an economy class will go up to Sh1,500 from Sh1,000 before.

First-class users will be hit the hardest since they will be parting with Sh4,500 one way from Sh3,000 currently.

In a statement, the company linked the hike in charges to the current high fuel prices, which have pushed up operational costs.

Only last month did the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) revise fuel prices upwards, with petrol soaring by Sh5.72 per liter, diesel (Sh4.48), and kerosene (Sh2.45).

It pushed a liter of petrol, diesel, and kerosene now retail at Sh217.36, Sh205.47, and Sh205.06 per liter in Nairobi.
