KISII, Kenya, May 13 – Bobasi Member of Parliament Innocent Obiri Momanyi was on Saturday evening taken into police custody and is being held at the Central station.
He was arrested at a Nairobi hotel and Central police boss Robinson Thuku told Capital FM News that the suspect will be handed over to the directorate of criminal investigations Kisii division for arraignment on Monday.
The MP is accused of causing a disturbance and maliciously damaging property belonging to the Nyamonema quarry.
His bodyguard, a police officer attached to him, was also arrested in Athi River, Machakos on Friday for the offence of assault, causing bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
Momanyi is accused of storming the quarry on three weeks ago demanding that they shut down their machines which he claimed had caused women to miscarry and resulted in damage to surrounding property.
An altercation during which one of the vehicles belonging to the quarry was set ablaze and reduced to a shell.
Area residents who accompanied the MP complained that the National Environment Management Authority had failed to take action despite numerous complaints.
