, NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 21 – A chopper believed to have five people on board crashed into Lake Nakuru moments after take –off from the town.
There was no immediate confirmation on the identity of those on board apart from the pilot, but there were reports that one of the passengers is a local politician and three other people.
An official at the National Disaster Management Unit said they have mobilized a team to the site to undertake a search and rescue operation.
“Unfortunately a private chopper has drowned in Lake Nakuru. It is suspected that the pilot and crew are still trapped inside,” Pius Masai, the unit’s deputy communications director said in a short statement.
The chopper had just taken off from a hotel in the town shortly after 6 am, according to police sources.
Our Correspondent from the region said rescuers from the Kenya Police, Kenya Wildlife Service and other government agencies were on site but were yet to start the search and rescue efforts.
