“I was touched by your efforts to fundraise for your colleague. I felt we must act and do so now to support you,” President Kenyatta said after meeting five students from the Murang’a county school at State House.
Ms Wakiara, suffering from acute kidney failure, requires a transplant that will be performed in India. She needs Sh3 million for the transplant and related costs. As part of her treatment, she is undergoing dialysis at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Health Minister James Macharia, Director of Medical Services Dr Nicholas Muraguri, and teachers and close relatives of Ms Wakiara accompanied Winnie Thiong’o, Esther Mwangi, Anne Wangui, Emma Wanjiru and Anne Kioge – the five fundraisers – to State House.
The President praised the five girls for their gallant fundraising efforts, including the television appeal, saying true friends and patriots often sought to tackle the critical issues of the day in the manner the girls had done.
Later, the President took the five girls on a tour of State House.
