NAIROBI, Kenya June 18 – Operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were grounded on Wednesday morning after a body of a middle aged man was found dead on the runway.

An airport security source told Capital FM News that landing and take-off was temporarily suspended until the runway was cleared.

“The runway has been closed because of this incident,” one senior police officer said, speaking from the scene of the incident. “Planes cannot land or take off while the young man’s body is still lying here.”

According to police, an initial investigation based on assessment on the man’s body shows he might have been a stowaway who fell off from a landing aircraft.

“He has minor bruises which suggest he didn’t fell off from a higher height,” another officer said.
The two police officers who spoke to Capital FM News were not willing to be quoted because they are not allowed to offer media briefings at the risk of undermining authorities.

“I am sure a statement will be issued by our bosses,” one of the officer said, adding “preparations are being made to get the body out of this place once it is examined by detectives.”

Scenes of Crimes detectives based at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) were called to the airport to examine the body before it was taken to the mortuary.

Police said they were trying to establish if there were any identification documents on the body of the man whose nationality was not immediately known.
