NAIROBI, Kenya, March 13 – The by-election for Maua County Assembly Ward has been postponed to be held jointly with the Meru gubernatorial election following Wednesday’s Court of Appeal ruling nullifying Peter Munya’s election.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), postponing the Maua by-election from April 29 will save costs.

“The by-election for Maua County Assembly Ward which was to be conducted in April will now be held at the same time as that of the Meru Governor.”

“This is because Maua County Assembly Ward is in Meru County and it is logistically convenient and cheaper to combine the two by-elections,” a statement by the IEBC’s communication Manager Tabitha Mutemi explained.

The statement added: “The Othaya Parliamentary by-election remains as scheduled on April 29, 2014.”

The date for the Maua Ward and Meru gubernatorial by-elections will be announced at a later date.

The Maua seat fell vacant in February following the death of Abednego Miitine in a road accident, whereas the Meru Governor’s post fell vacant after the Court of Appeal nullified Munya’s election this week.

Munya was declared the winner after he garnered 184,273 votes against former assistant minister Kilemi Mwiria’s 180,837 votes.
