Coach Kirwa upbeat of team fitness

NAIROBI, August 6 – Kenya’s athletics head coach Julius Kirwa is aiming for medals from his team as it prepares for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, boasting of no major injury setbacks.

Currently two squads of the team are still in the country preparing to join the rest of the team that left for Beijing last Friday.

“The team fitness is well and we are hoping that our athletes will perform for the championships in Beijing as they prepare in the camp,” Kirwa said.

“We are hoping that God will guide us and emerge victorious.’’

The Olympics camp had been invaded by dissent last week as athletes disagreed with officials on flight schedules. The coach however said Tuesday that the issue had been ironed out and schedules rearranged to ensure that all athletes got enough time to prepare fully.

“Some start on 15th so they will depart on 11th and they will have two days to prepare for the championship,” said Kirwa. “There are events which will come earlier so the athletes will have three days to adapt to the conditions.’’
