NAIROBI, Kenya, March 11 – The national men and women’s beach volleyball teams continued their quest for medals at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana with straight set victories on Monday evening over Gambia and Mauritius respectively.
The pair of Jairus Kipkosgei and Elphas Makuto proved too strong for their Gambian counterparts of Sainey Jawo and Mario Dampha, beating them 21-14, 21-17.
The win was a great relief to the Kenyans who began their campaign with a 0-2 loss (13-21, 19-21) in their Group E opener.
Their female counterparts, Yvonne Wavinya and Gaudencia Makokha, made it two out of two wins, with a 2-0 thrashing (22-20, 21-6) of Mauritius’ Valentine Paul and Lizza Bonne.
The pair began their campaign with a 2-0 (21-8, 21-9) win over Benin in their Pool E opener on Sunday.
The ladies will be hoping to go one better than the last edition of the tournament in 2019 when they clinched silver after losing to Egypt in the final.
