NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 27 – Tennis Kenya Secretary General Wanjiru Mbugua Karani became the first woman to be voted in as the Eastern Africa president.
She is also the only second African woman to be voted in as the vice president of Confederation of African Tennis.
Wanjiru attained 6 votes against Comoros Mahamoud Zayya who attained 5 with the vote going for a second round after Wanjiru and Zayya both attained 5 votes each in the first round.

Wanjiru was elected during the 50th AGM of Confederation of African Tennis held in Nairobi.
The elective AGM ushered in new tennis leadership in Africa with Benin’s Jean Claude Talon voted in the new president of Confederation of African Tennis.
Talon, who is also the president of Benin Tennis garnered 25 votes over Nelson Amanze of Botswana who had 12.
Talon takes over from Tunisia’s Tarak Cherif who served for 19 years.
The presidency subject to a second round of voting after no candidate garnered ¾ of votes from the 38 federations present.
The elective AGM was graced by International Tennis Federation (ITF) boss David
Haggerty.
