Evangelical Alliance protests Carrefour’s move to unstock olive oil

In a letter addressed to Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard, EAK claimed Carrefour had unilaterally withdrawn the product from the market and accused the retailer of directly interfering with the religious liberties of shoppers.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 2 — The Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) has protested a move by Majid Al Futtaim-owned retailer, Carrefour, to unstock virgin olive oil products from Israel terming it discriminatory.

In a letter addressed to Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard, EAK claimed Carrefour had unilaterally withdrawn the product from the market and accused the retailer of directly interfering with the religious liberties of shoppers.

“It has come to our attention that certain products from Israel have been withdrawn from your stores. This decision not only interferes with the rights of Kenyan consumers but also deeply impacts the Christian community,” EAK stated.

The alliance urged Carrefour to reconsider the decision and not to let international conflicts interfere with consumer choices in Kenya.

“We trust that you will take swift action to rectify this situation and ensure that all Kenyan consumers have access to the products they desire without interference,” the alliance appealed in its February 27 letter.

EAK stressed that the withdrawal of the product significantly violates the religious and economic rights of Kenyans.

“We understand the complexities of global politics, but we firmly believe that the Middle East conflict should not be imported into Kenya through commercial actions,” the evengelicals asserted.

“As a prominent retailer in our community, Carrefour has the responsibility to uphold ethical standards, and promote harmony among its customers,” EAK said.
