NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 28 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is set to embark on a 100 Day Rapid Results Initiative to fight graft the national and county levels of government.
The initiative was announced during the unveiling of the National Ethics and corruption survey 2023.
According to the anti-graft body’s chairman David Oginde, the initiative sought proactive measures to tackle challenges faced by government departments in combating corruption.
“The 100 Day Rapid Results is meant to see on how to work together and identify areas of weakness being used by corrupt Individuals. We will identify means and ways to reduce incidences of bribery and corruption,” Bishop Oginde stated.
He pointed out that the initiative is intended to run from 11 April and culminate on 11 July coinciding Africa Anticorruption day with intensive engagements with departments mentioned in the report.
“We believe we can make some of the entities be mention becomes places of service. We will also have a campaign dubbed 40 days of integrity geared for the general public to commit to living and practicing integrity and ethical practice, he said.”
According to the survey, members of the public parted with an average bribe of Sh11,625 in order to access services at a public office. The figure spiked from Sh6,865 reported in 2022.
The report further found that job seekers, passport applicants paid largest kickbacks during the period under survey. the National Police Service (NPS), Department of Immigration and Registrar of Persons once again topped the list of most corrupt government departments in the survey.
Nairobi, West Pokot and Uasin Gishu topped the County Bribery index while Kajiado emerged as the least corrupt county.
The survey further reveals that 98 per cent of those polled said they did report a case of bribery.
A paltry 2 per cent said the reported.
The number of people willing to participate in corruption or unethical conduct fell to 14 per cent in 2023 as compare to 16 per cent during the same period in 2022
Furthermore, Bishop Oginde called upon all stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, and the general public, to actively participate in and support the 100-Day Rapid Results Initiative.
He emphasized the importance of collective action in driving meaningful change and building a more resilient and responsive governance framework.
